THE ROAD TO JAVELINA

Getting to the starting line of a 100-mile race is a journey of its own.

From the lessons learned during my first attempt at 100 miles at Zion to training on the actual Javelina course, there’s been plenty of preparation, experimentation, and a plenty of mistakes along the way.

Here’s how I got ready to take on 100 miles in the Arizona desert.

LET’S START WITH WHAT I LEARNED AT ZIONI

My first attempt at 100 miles ended at mile 52. It wasn’t the result I wanted, but it taught me some valuable lessons about pacing, preparation, and what can go wrong over 100 miles. Here’s what happened and what I’m doing differently at Javelina.

JAVELINA TRAINING CAMP WITH EVERYDAY ULTRA

There’s no substitute for actually getting out on the course. I was fortunate enough to spend October 9-11th in Arizona running over 40 miles on the Javelina Course with the Everyday Ultra Racing Team. I was testing my gear and fueling and getting a better feel of what to expect on race day.

MY SUCCESS/FAILURE LIINE (SFL)

The success/failure line (SFL) is a concept I use when attempting big challenges in life. It is “the minimum measurable outcome that you would be genuinely happy with when undertaking a challenging endeavor.”

JAVELINA GEAR AND PACKING LIST

Running 100 miles takes a lot more than a pair of shoes. From fueling and hydration to lighting, clothing, first aid, and everything that we are bringing for our crew setup, I’ve put together a complete breakdown of what I’m packing for Javelina. Probably more than I need, but I’d rather be over prepared than underprepared.

JAVELINA JUNDRED: THE PRE-RACE PLAN

I’ve spent months preparing for these 100 miles, and now it’s time to put the plan on paper. Pacing, fueling, hydration, aid stations, crew strategy, and everything else that I can control before race day. Here is the pre-race strategy I am taking into the desert…will likely be thrown out the window by lap 1!
